Graduate Semester Credit Hours: 60

The goal of the National College of Midwifery’s PHD program is to produce useful research that is published and presented to the midwifery community, nationally and internationally.

Please read our Graduate Research Proposals guidelines before you submit your proposal and our Graduate Research Project Guidelines before you begin working on the project. This information is also available as part of the PHD application packet on our downloads page.

Prerequisites

Proof of these must be submitted to the college before acceptance into the Program.

Obtaining The Doctorate of Philosophy Degree
You will have up to five years to complete a research project and doctoral dissertation under the supervision of a preceptor holding a Ph.D. in a health related field or holding an MD as an OB-GYN with research experience. Your research proposal must be approved by your preceptor and by the Faculty Board.

Remember, it is up to the Student to find and employ his/her preceptor. You must pay the preceptor his/her required fees and submit your contract to the college

 

Doctorate of Philosophy in Midwifery Degree awarded when

  1. The prerequisites are met.
  2. The course requirements are complete.
  3. Your completed dissertation is approved by your preceptor.
  4. Your completed dissertation is published in a midwifery or related professional journal or as a book.
  5. Your dissertation is presented to a major national or international conference of midwives, such as MANA, ACNM, ICM, etc.
  6. Your completed dissertation is submitted to and approved by the Faculty Board with evidence of completion of all the above.
  7. You submit proof of 36 credit hours relevant to the areas of your research.
  8. A bound copy of the Doctoral Dissertation is placed in the College Library
  9. The College has documentation of all of the above
