The ASM program is based on the Midwives Alliance of North America‘s Core Competencies, on the skills and experience requirements by the North American Registry of Midwives for Certified Professional Midwives, and on the accreditation requirements of the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council.
The ASM is the heart of the College as it guides students through their midwifery studies using a College-produced book of modules; these are broken down into Learning Objectives for each module. There are general education requirements as well as the midwifery requirements. Official transcripts of required subjects achieved at any other accredited school or program are accepted.
Remember, you, the student, find and employ the preceptor. This is a voluntary relationship between you both. It is your responsibility to be sure your preceptor can provide the clinical and academic supervision required. Please check the requirements your proposed preceptor must meet in order to be acceptable to the college.
In the case of having to use other clinical or academic preceptors to achieve your requirements, all additional preceptors must apply to and be approved by the College. All academic requirements obtained in other settings must be from accredited programs and official transcripts must be forwarded to the College.
You can dual enroll in your preceptor's midwifery educational program and in the National College of Midwifery at the same time. You will have to meet the requirements for both programs. You pay the College a one-time administrative fee and you will be paying preceptor fee directly to your preceptor. The College provides the Learning Objectives (Clinical and Academic Course requirements) and the tracking materials so that you can document your achievements, and the College approves your syllabii, your grades, evaluations, transcripts, outside exam verification and issues your diploma. Please check our Downloads page for the relevant materials.
Students and preceptors fill out Syllabii at the beginning of January, June and September outlining how they will complete the Modules of their choice. These can be undertaken in any order. At the end of May, August and December students and preceptors undertake mutual evaluation sessions and the student receives grades on completed work. Grades, evaluations and numbers of required clinical experiences achieved are then forwarded to the College for record-keeping and the College sends the student a current transcript.
The Associate of Science Degree is awarded only when:
1. The Prerequisites are met
2. When Skills, Clinical and Academic Course requirements are successfully completed.
3. When outside examination is completed.
4. When the college has documentation of all of the above.
