MEAC Abbreviated NARM Skills Form
Clinical Skills Training takes place throughout the program; during the academic and clinical portions, and individual NARM skills are repeated many times throughout the academic modules, however both academic and clinical portions are necessary for learning to take place: # 1 below is completed at home, #2 below is completed in a classroom setting, and #'s 3-7 below take place in a clinical setting. The student is exposed to the skill at least 7 times during training/learning:
-
1. Student reads about the skill in the textbook : Practical Skills Guide for Midwifery by Pam Weaver and Sharon K. Evans.
-
2. Preceptor elaborates about the skill.
-
3. Preceptor demonstrates skill.
-
4, 5, & 6. Student practices skill at least 3 times to gain mastery*(see definition below).
-
7. Preceptor evaluates student's demonstration of the skill.
-
As these take place in a clinical setting, these are awarded clinical contact hours.
The average Approximate Clinical time for each of the 151 NARM skills:
- Preceptor Demonstration: 40 minutes
- Student Practice (at least 3 times): 120 minutes
- Student Evaluation by Preceptor: 40 minutes.
The total average time spent clinically on each NARM Skill every time it is introduced in an academic course is approximately 204 minutes (200 minutes x 154 NARM skills + 2nd evaluation for 4 NARM Skills = 517.5 clinical contact hours). Times are approximate, based on the fastest a skill is usually learned by a student. The students are required to repeat each skill an average of 15 times throughout academic courses and apprenticeship, so actual clinical hours may be greater, however clinical contact hours are awarded only for minimum.
Academic courses CAN be completed without the student achieving mastery* of each skill, however each skill on the MEAC Abbreviated NARM Skills Form is not filled in until the student achieves Mastery* of the skill. Explanation of Clinical Contact Hours awarded for NARM Skills
