ACADEMICS

Preceptors take the course in midwifery instruction: ICM Core Competencies for Midwifery Instructors Power Point Presentation and Assessment Tool - Available on the Preceptor Disc.

The Academic or theoretical portion of the ASM program consists of 62 courses in 8 modules equaling 1,200 hours/80 credits (84 credits for California version). These courses include general education courses and Midwifery modules. The Midwifery courses include Antepartum, Intrapartum, Postpartum, Newborn, and Well Woman modules. These courses include academic study, as well as clinical skills and the MANA Core Competencies for Midwives.

How to complete Academic Courses:

The student and preceptor use the course Syllabi below. Each syllabus lists the number of Credits, Learning Objectives, Learning Activities, Learning Resources, Evaluation Methods, Study Questions, Clinical/NARM Skills, and MANA Core Competencies to be completed.

  • All students use NCM Syllabi ("Syllabi Summary Sheet" NO longer required)
  • Preceptor evaluation of student knowledge of the Study Questions -Students should be able to stand by their answers, and even write the page number and text that they used to answer the question.  Once the student has found answers to all the questions,  she/he should present the answers to the preceptor. As the student does this, the preceptor elaborates on the answers and how they happen in real life.  If there are some questions that the student is unclear on or that she/he couldn't find an acceptable answer for, then the preceptor can help answer it.  In order to be sure the student has found the most up-to-date answer, the student and preceptor should be sure to have the most updated text on-hand for reference. The student should be able to find the answer in the most recent learning resources, and she/he should know where to find it.
  • Clinical Skills (NARM Skills) and MANA Core Competencies are completed concurrently as the student attends clinic during the apprenticeship with the preceptor. Introduction and evaluation of individual clinical skills is repeated in multiple places throughout the academic portion of the program. Academic courses CAN be completed without the student achieving mastery* of each skill, however each skill on the MEAC Abbreviated NARM Skills Form is not filled in until the student achieves Mastery* of the skill.
  • Preceptor and student submit grades to NCM at the end of each trimester by filling in the date and grade on a Student Record Form excel version or adobe acrobat version or for California Students, on a California Student Record Form-excel version or California adobe acrobat version and sending the form to NCM. The preceptor must SIGN and DATE the form!
  • Special rules for CPR and NRP: These certifications must be completed with an instructor licensed with a recognized certifying agency. Copies of the front and back of CPR and NRP Certification Cards must be submitted to NCM. These certifications must be current at the time of graduation. (CPR and NRP courses completed ONLINE are NOT acceptable).
  • In order to receive transfer credit for courses completed at another accredited school, college, or university, please have an official transcript sent to NCM for review.

Each course syllabus lists the academic credits awarded for the course. 1 Academic credit equals approximately 15 hours of formal* time plus 30 hours of additional study or homework. *Formal time is defined as the amount of time it takes to answer the study questions to the level of 80% and to complete any learning activities to the preceptor's satisfaction.
